Spanish-language books

Books in Spanish for area schools and organizations were delivered on May 28 by the Mexican consulate in Oxnard. The books — history, geography and literature collections — are available at no cost in collections of 55 volumes.

Social Justice Fund holds inaugural fundraiser

Rebozo Festival brings out large crowds
for good cause

Rebozos were not in a short supply. Madrinas and other community members gather for a group photo. The 6th annual Rebozo Festival was held May 23 at the historic Adolfo Camarillo Ranch in Camarillo, California. Proceeds of the event benefited the Café on A Foundation.

Community shows off cool rides

J.R. Corralejo of Moorpark shows off his '64 Chevy Impala, surrounded with Lakers banners. He has been working on his ride for the past three years. The second annual California Car & Cycle Show, a benefit for El Concilio del Condado de Ventura, was held on May 23, 2010 at the Ventura County Fairgrounds in Ventura, California. An estimated 15,000-plus car enthusiasts attended the event that featured more than 800 competitors, music, food and games for the children.

Oaxacan community holds annual festival

It was a time to dance and celebrate Oaxacan culture. Club Ñuu Savi del estado de Oaxaca and Unidad Popular Benito Juárez presented the free cultural celebration Guelaguetza 2010 on May 23 in La Colonia neighborhood of Oxnard. The program includes Oaxacan food, arts and crafts, dances from the seven regions of Oaxaca, with the participation of Banda Y.E.B, Chareos de Santiago del Rio, Los Rubios de Santiago Juxtlahuaca, Diablos de la Mixteca and Grupo Folklórico Centeotl.

One Person Art Contest to benefit several
non-profit organizations

Artist Gerald Zwers, left, Xavier "Big X" Montes and Kathy Zwers, celebrate the opening reception for the "Gerald Zwers One Person Art Contest" on Friday, April 2 at The Buenaventura Art Gallery, 700 E. Community remembers César Chávez
by taking part in immigration march

Javier Gomez, founder of the Inlakech Cultural Arts Center, kicks off the event as an estimated 1,000 community members took part in a march for Comprehensive Immigration Reform in memory of César Chávez on Sunday, March 21. The event began at Parque del Sol in La Colonia and concluded with speeches at Plaza Park in Oxnard. Participating organizations included VC CLUE, the United Farm Workers union, La Hermandad and the Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy.

Mexican Consulate hosts health information fair

Vicky Bobadilla, of the Center for Family Health, performs blood glucose and cholesterol level testing at the main tent. The Mexican Consulate and the Ventura County Health Agency presented a health fair on March 20 at the consulate's office in Oxnard. The event, part of the consulate's Ventanilla de Salud (Health Window), provided free health screenings and a variety of health information for the public.

in local education

Parents show their concern for their children's education. Celebration of St. Patrick's Day a time to remember cross-cultural history

Performers dressed in the garb of Los Patricios brigade holds a stylized Virgen de Guadalupe at the head of the marching group. Community gets free tax help during
Mega Tax Day in Oxnard

Salvador Vazquez helps taxpayers seeking information. El Concilio del Condado de Ventura was the site for the Mega Tax Day held Saturday, Feb. 20 in Oxnard. The event was presented by the Ventura County Financial Empowerment Partnership, which is seeking to increase the number of individuals and families who receive no-cost tax preparation. Partnership members included United Way of Ventura County, the Business and Employment Services Department of the Health Services Agency of Ventura County, Cabrillo Economic Development Corp., FileYourTaxes.com, the Central Coast Alliance for a Sustainable Economy and the IRS.

Dancing for a good cause

Amal Duwaik, right, goes from a blur to a classic pose as more than 300 dance enthusiasts of all ages, shapes and sizes came out to the Hueneme High School Gymnasium on Saturday, Jan. 30 to participate in Future Leaders of America's inaugural Zumbathon. The event, sponsored by the high school's Club Herencia Hispana, raised funds for FLA's leadership programs. Zumba is an aerobic workout that fuses salsa, cumbia, merengue and flamenco.

Groups partner to aid Mercy Ministries

The event benefited Mercy Ministries in Nyeland Acres/El Rio. Since January 2008, the organization has been operating a food pantry every Saturday in the Nyeland Acres/El Rio neighborhood of Oxnard, where it feeds about 150 families.

Mexican harpist entertains, educates community

Acclaimed Mexican concert harpist Mercedes Gomez Benet entertained and educated the audience on harp techniques during a performance on Wednesday, Dec. 16 at the Carnegie Art Museum in Oxnard. The program was presented by the Consul of Mexico in Oxnard as part of Teatro de las Américas' presentation of "Pasto-RE-LA," which concludes on Dec. 18 and 19 with performances at Café on A in downtown Oxnard. Her performance included Sones Púrhepechas from Michoacan, works by composers such as Manuel M. Ponce, Ventura Romero Armendáriz, Jorge Torre Sáenz, Eugenio Toussaint, Betaza Sones of the Oaxacan Sierra and the Suite Pa 'Su Meche, commissioned, premiered and recorded by Mercedes Gomez Benet for her CD "Zarpa Al Azar" in 1996.

Museum celebrates 'Para los Niños'

Photographer Arturo Pérez captures the attention of both children and adults with his story telling. More than 230 migrant families from Santa Paula and Oceanview school districts participated in the second annual "Para los Niños" holiday celebration held on Dec. 16 at the Museum of Ventura County, Ventura. The event, sponsored Las Contemporáneas, a Latina committee at the museum, featured the latest art exhibition by Omar d’Leon curated by Anna Bermudez, music by Xavier Montes y su grupo de pequeños músicos--Conjunto Callejon, bilingual storytelling, holiday art projects, and playing Loteria. Students from California State University Channel Islands also assisted with the event contributing their time and bilingual skills to the community.

celebrates 'Fiesta Navideña'


These young people enjoy a not-so-traditional holiday meal of chips and salsa at Harrington Elementary School in Oxnard. Thanks to the support of volunteers, and donations of toys, food and other goods by the community, the Mixteco/Indigena Community Organizing Project held its annual "Fiesta Navideña" at Harrington Elementary School and at Rio Rio School in Nyeland Acres on Dec. 5. Hundreds of people came to the event which featured music, a papel picado demonstration for the children and words of encouragement from community leaders.

Oxnard lights up the holidays


The City of Oxnard officially brought in the holiday season when Santa Claus and his helpers took part in the 59th Annual Tree Lighting ceremony at Plaza Park on Friday, Dec. 4. City officials say that the Oxnard tree, which stands more than 110 feet tall,
is Ventura County’s tallest Christmas Tree. The ceremony include entertainment,
refreshments, and of course Old St. Nick.

It was like a family gathering at the temporary location of the Museum of Ventura County on Saturday, Nov. 28, 2009 as the "Wearing Our Stories" exhibition came to an end. Cmdr. Geoff Dean, a candidate for Ventura County Sheriff, was the keynote speaker at the Gold Coast Hispanic Business Council meeting at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Wedgewood Banquet Center in Ventura. Dean explained his qualifications for

The Poor Clare Catholic Sisters from Chalco, Mexico visited Sacred Heart Church in Ventura, California on Nov. 8, 2009 to sell hand made embroidered linens, artifacts and religious articles to raise funds to complete a skills training classroom, and to purchase equipment and program materials needed for the the training center’s operation. The Sisters recruit and prepare indigenous women and poor families for employment in Mexico. The event was organized by the Sacred Heart Church “St. Rose of Lima Outreach to the Poor Committee” in collaboration with the Knights of Columbus and Father Cyprian Carlo.

Ventura celebrates El Día de los Muertos

The Museum of Ventura County held its 9th annual El Día de los Muertos Community Day Celebration Sunday, Nov. 1, 2009 in Ventura, California. More than 1,500 attended the celebration, museum officials reported. Visitors had the opportunity to view ofrendas (altars) and participate in workshops within the museum and then go across the street to a mini park to watch folklorico and other dance performances.

Even though it was a hot day in the Santa Clara Valley, the public was lined up for a free Filmore Community Health Fair held on Oct. 17, 2009 at the Fillmore Senior Center on Santa Clara Street in Fillmore, California. A green time at Avocado Festival


Avocados of all types and sizes were produced and sold by the Marquez family. Thousands of Californians filled Linden Avenue in Carpinteria, California for the two-day California Avocado Festival on Oct. 3-4, 2009. Since 1985, the festival has been an event designed to promote the local economy and to showcase Carpinteria as a great weekend getaway resort. The region is the third largest avocado producer in North America and a natural point for a food-themed celebration.

Community comes out for Day of Caring


A volunteer applies a power driver to the bolts holding the panels. More than 600 volunteers spread out throughout Ventura County to participate in the United Way of Ventura County's annual "Day of Caring," held Saturday, Sept. 26, 2009 throughout Ventura County, California. The event brought together teams and individual volunteers to help nonprofit organizations in the community with a variety of tasks, such as sorting and packing canned goods at Mercy Ministries in El Rio, light landscaping, painting, spending time with seniors, hosting youth arts and crafts tables and other projects. At the corner of Harbor Boulevard and Olivas Park Drive in Ventura, hundreds of volunteers gathered at River Haven to build composite dome shelters that will take the place of ragged tents pitched by the homeless in the area. By the end of the event, a total of 19 shelters were built. There will be portable toilets and a cooking facility at the camp, which is intended as a way for homeless individuals to get better housing and some much-needed help. This project was under the direction of the Turning Point Foundation.

A receptive audience

A grito for celebration


Carmen Jara makes a point during her musical presentation during El Grito de Dolores celebration on Sept. 15, 2009 at Plaza Park in downtown Oxnard, California. An estimated 2,500 people filled the downtown area to commemorate Mexico's independence from Spain with a civic ceremony, dancing and a savory fiesta of food. There was a reading of the event, known as El Grito de Dolores when father Miguel Hidalgo issued a call for independence 199 years ago. The event was organized by the Mexican Cultural Committee under the direction of president Angelica Magaña.

A colorful parade


Old Glory took an important spot along with the Mexican flag during the Fiestas Patrias Parade on Sept. 13, 2009 in Oxnard, California. The Fiestas Patrias Parade marched up C Street in downtown Oxnard and was followed by a festival with music at Plaza Park. The parade was sponsored by the Mexican Cultural Committee, a non-profit organization focusing on cultural arts and sports events. The Mexican Independence Day celebration will conclude on Tuesday, Sept 15 with the Grito at Plaza Park.

Community celebrates 'Day for Kids'


Mary Estrada and Ruth Rodriguez help kids sign a pledge of "Hands are not for Hitting" and sign it with the palm print at a booth sponsored by Interface Family Violence Response Team. More than 1,600 people attended the fourth annual "Day for Kids" held Saturday, Sept. 12, 2009 at the The Martin V. Smith Youth Center in Oxnard. That was more than double last year’s attendance, said Tiffany Lopez, director of volunteer services for the Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Oxnard and Port Hueneme. The free event featured rides, games, information booths and entertainment. This was all about spending time with children and bringing the family and community together, Lopez said.

Mariachi Aguilas de Mexico helped kick off the 4th Annual Fandango music festival on Sunday, Sept. 6, 2009, in Santa Paula. Presented by artist/musician Xavier Montes, the event was held at the Santa Paula Railroad Depot's gazebo featuring Mexican music and arts and crafts. The large crowd enjoyed cooling winds and bright sunlight for a picture perfect seven hours of continous entertainment.

Ventura in 2009 enjoyed its own brand of 4th of July tradition with its annual
"Pushem, Pullem Parade" and 4th of July Street Fair. The street fair
drew thousands of visitors to the downtown area.

Oxnard celebrated the 4th of July 2009 in style with a musical concert at Plaza Park in downtown. Audience members, were treated to oldies played by the '60s tribute band:
Age of Aquarius. Band members included Connie Early, who bangs on a cowbell during a performance of "Everyday People."

Carnival rides, food, curios and entertainment could be found by visitors to Navy Base Ventura County during the annual Seebee Days celebration, June 13-14, 200 in Port Hueneme, California. Visitors could also take advantage of tours offered to a U.S. Navy ship docked at the Port of Hueneme.

Visitors crowd into the Ventura Main Street Mini Fair on June 1, 2009. The fair, which is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., offers free performances by local artists as well as activities for children. It takes place at the mini park on Main Street between Oak and Palm streets in downtown Ventura, California. The fair continues through late September.

This young lady gets into the Memorial Day spirit as she waves an American flag and skips along the sidewalk. Hundreds of area residents had a magnificent sunny day at the Memorial Day Celebration at the Ventura Harbor on May 25, 2009. Even tough the Summer season does not start until the middle of June, this three-day weekend has traditionally become the unofficial start of the summer. The gloomy weather lifted early, making the festivity a welcome and less expensive destination for residents
of Ventura and Santa Barbara counties.

Guitar virtuoso Carlos Gonzáles plays classical compositions written by master musicians of the past and present to a packed audience at the Oxnard Public Library on May 17, 2009. Gonzáles, who grew up a few blocks from the old library building, said he used to go there to read about music and how to improve his playing.
He teaches at Oxnard and Ventura colleges.

A record 800 people attended the annual Rebozo Festival held May 17,2009 at the Camarillo Ranch in Camarillo, California. The event raised more than $25,000 for this year's charity: The Ventura County Chapter of Parents of Murdered Children.
